The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the option to contest certain rulings from the official, echoing the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
