Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such treatments must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
