Olympians Call on Iranian Authorities to Stop Death Sentence of Champion Boxer
More than 20 Olympic medal winners, trainers and further global sports figures have put their names to a statement calling for a stop to the death penalty of a boxing champion and coach, who is facing execution in Iran.
Escalating Global Anger
Amid increasing international outrage over Iran’s escalating use of capital punishment as a means of suppression, the powerfully expressed statement denounces the Iranian regime's ruling to maintain the execution order of the boxing champion.
The boxer, thirty, from Mashhad in the northern province, was taken into custody for being involved in nationwide protests in the year 2019 and accused of aiding an opposition group. He has endured half a decade in incarceration, where he has been mistreated and confined in isolation.
“Sport is intended to inspire hope, unity, and bravery,” the endorsers stated. “The execution of a titleholder for his beliefs is a clear violation on these values and a admonition to any competitor who attempts to express dissent.
History of Putting to Death Competitors
The appeal noted that Vafaei Sani’s circumstances was not an isolated one and underscored the country's history of executing athletes for their convictions, such as a national team leader, skipper of the soccer squad, and a women's sports leader, captain of the female volleyball side. Detention and Flawed Legal Process
The boxer was taken into custody in the spring of 2020. The allegations against him included “spreading corruption on Earth through fire-setting and damage of public property”. His sentence has been reversed twice but on the fourth of October it was confirmed on the third occasion. His legal proceedings was condemned as “highly unjust” by rights defenders and bodies.
Appeal to UN
The appeal to halt Vafaei Sani’s death sentence comes after a 2023 appeal to the UN high commissioner for rights, endorsed by over 100 rights specialists and organizations, urging measures to avert the sports figure's capital punishment.
Death Penalty Surge
As per reports, there is an “execution crisis in the country, which has attained alarming dimensions”. In two thousand twenty-three, the government executed at least 853 people – a nearly half surge on the previous year. In the prior period, data showed 972 capital punishments, marking the highest number since the year 2015. In excess of 800 people have been put to death so far in the current year.
